I checked my email today and to my surprise found an email from Microsoft. Wow, a new msn messenger, or should i now call it ‘Live Messenger’. So I downloaded it out of intrigue – what does it offer. Well firstly, it looks as if it’s been snazzed up design wise. Looking more colourful and more busy than ever. I don’t really mind or love the new design additions, I always was a fan of the classic, simple version. One thing I’ll make note of is the annoying icons they’ve added which don’t really do much. For instance a small paint brush allowing you to change the colour of your Live Messenger – this really just changes the shade of colour. Oh and I just noticed, a new but equally annoying message tone.
Anyway – lets look at the new features.
PC – to – PC Calling
Have a free voice conversation via this feature – good idea, maybe this will eliminate the need for Google Talk? or depending whether it’s any good or not, enforce the use of Google Talk.
Even Better Video Conversations
I like how they call it even better? But yes, this is a good feature – if you bother to use it. Maybe back in the day of International Online dating I would take more interest.
Sharing Folders
Now it’s just getting confusing – share folders amongst users, I’ve never even remotely considered the need for this feature? have you? Microsoft are thinking outside the square.
Text Messages to Phones
Damn, this had better be free.
Super-Powered Address Book
Does every program have an address book? I guess in essence it’s a good idea, as details are updated automatically by users. The only problem I see are all those people who jot down fake details. When i turn up for a party at 123 Tree Street I won’t be happy.
Headlines / Sports Scores etc
Great – more advertising clogging up my chat window – and more stolen bandwidth. Furthermore – these are in popup form, I hope these can be abled/disabled. What ever happened to ICQ?
Talk to your yahoo friends too
Talk to your yahoo messenger friends – finally, a feature which will reduce the painfulness of multiple programs and screen realestate – now all i need is some friends who actually use yahoo’s messenger for this to be of use.
